MARSHALL, Texas – After splitting their previous two matches, including a thrilling double overtime victory win over Sul Ross State, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team will hit the road this week for two matches. ETBU will start with a trip to Conway, Ark. to take on Hendrix College on Tuesday night before returning to American Southwest Conference play on Saturday with a short drive to Longview against LeTourneau University.
In their first match last week, ETBU made their first road trip ever to Alpine, Texas, to take on Sul Ross State. They came away with a dramatic 3-2 double-overtime win with
Silas Sangano's second goal of the game being the game winner.
Brett Rose would tack on the other goal while
Justin Groves made six saves. The Tigers would finish the week hosting Colorado College at Cornish Field, where they would fall 3-0.
With the two goals against SRSU, Sangano leads ETBU with three goals for a total of six points while
Samuel Arellano has two assists of the season. The two of them also have 11 shots in total while both
Daniel Rutter and
Juan Cairo have 10 shots.
Bryant Botello still has ETBU's lead in saves (41) and goals against average (0.99).
At 4-4-1 overall and now 2-2-1 in the ASC, the Tigers have managed to get themselves back to the top six in the conference standings. But the lessons they learned the past week, especially from their match vs. Colorado College, look to inspire them for the rest of the season as head coach
Chris Crawford explains. "We learned that that we can move the ball against a team that is a good caliber, quality team," said Coach Crawford. "We can control the game and we can control the clock. Now we've got to execute the smaller things. We need to fine tune and fix those things and continue to build on that. The guys understood that it's terrible to lose. No one wants to lose. But we're going to learn from that. We're going to get better from it and grow from it. And we're going to continue to be more of a cohesive unit."
ETBU will take to the road, again, on Tuesday night for game at HC. A season ago, ETBU shut out the Warriors 3-0 as both
Tristan England and
Daniel Rutter had goals in the game. This marked the third straight victory for ETBU over HC in their program history. Currently 4-7 right now, HC recently took a 2-1 defeat to Millsaps College. Ricky Barrientos has the team lead in goals with seven while Jackson Goodwin dished out six assists. In goal, Josh Neuman has allowed a 2.28 goals against average stat while making 38 saves.
On Saturday, ETBU takes on ASC rival LETU for the 30
th meeting. ETBU has won 18 matches all-time against the Yellow Jackets while picking up four ties and five losses, including last season's 2-0 loss at home. With a team-leading four goals and three assists, Luis De La Torre is the top scorer for LETU while CJ Leyva has 38 saves while allowing a 2.35 goals against average.
Tuesday's contest starts at 6:30 p.m. in Arkansas while Saturday's match will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Longview, Texas.
