OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. – Away on the road for the first time this season, the East Texas Baptist University hockey team fell in both games to the University of Mississippi.
In game one, ETBU lost 8-2 as
Michael Candido and
Davis Van Gemerden were the only two Tigers to score while
Devon Baird and
Skyler Spiller each had an assist. Game two would see the Rebels pick up a 7-4 victory. ETBU had a goal and two assists from
Riley Knott while Tyler McElroy talled a goal, and an assist. Van Gemerden scored two goals for ETBU as well.
Game 1: Ole Miss 8, ETBU 2
The Rebels would strike for three goals as Robert Seger (5:26), Austin Graf (10:00), and Nathan Sullivan (10:42) would make it a 3-0 lead after the first period. They would then continue to dominate as they put three goals to add on for a 6-0 lead in the second period. The goals came from Conner Baker (4:10), Harris Milson (13:12) and Anthony Pellegrino (15:02).
After a seventh goal scored by the Rebels from Lawrence Gerson (7:22) to start the third period, ETBU would finally get on the board as Van Gemerden got one in the net at 13:22. Conor Hue (16:29) would extend the Rebels' lead to 8-1 before Candido ended the scoring of the game with a goal at 18:22.
Game 2: Ole Miss 7, ETBU 4
The first period of game 2 was more the same as game one with Ole Miss scoring three goals from Michael Chirco (9:59), Conor Silk (11:20), and Seger (11:43). As the second period started, ETBU would cut into the lead with two goals in a span of a minute as Knott (3:07) and Tyler McElroy (3:56) would make the score 3-2.
But the Rebels would extend that lead with two goals from Scott Harlin (4:30) and Silk to make it a 5-2 lead. Van Gemerden goal at 10:55 was followed by two Connor Baker goals from the Rebels, who led 7-3 after two periods. Only one goal came in the third period as Van Gemerden tacked on a second goal to make it a 7-3 game. This would be the final score as the Rebels completed the sweep.
ETBU will look to pick up their first win of the season when they host the University of North Texas this weekend in Shreveport, La. Friday night's contest starts at 7:00 PM while Saturday's game starts at 2:00 PM.
