SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – Needing a win to end a four-game losing streak, the East Texas Baptist University hockey team scored a combined 37 goals during the two-game series against the University of North Texas. This not only put ETBU at 2-4 overall. But they would also set new scoring records for most goals in a game and in a two-game series.
Game one was a 14-2 victory for ETBU that would see both
Devon Baird and Mike Garvie score four goals each while
Davis Van Gemerden tallied two goals in the contest. The new record of 14 goals in one game would last for one day as ETBU exploded for 23 goals in the second game for a 23-4 win. Four of ETBU's players would get a hat trick, including six from
Riley Knott while Garvie,
Skyler Spiller, and

Game 1: ETBU 14, UNT 2
ETBU would start the scoring nearly two minutes into the game when
Michael Candido struck first for ETBU at 1:58. For nearly nine minutes afterwards, ETBU would compiled opportunity after opportunity to tack on while UNT struggled to get anything going as the Tigers' defense held them in check. Then in a span of 17 seconds, both Spiller (9:52) and Garvie (10:09) would each put the puck in the net to make it a 3-0 lead. Two more goals for ETBU came from
Ben Goodwin (14:30) and
Nick Scott as ETBU took a 5-0 lead going into the first intermission.
In the second period, the Tigers continued scoring as Garvie would start it with his second goal at 6:44 and a 6-0 lead.
Devon Baird would then make it 8-0 with back-to-back goals at 11:53 and 13:43 before the Eagles finally got on the board with a goal from Kevin Ely (15:03). Still, ETBU answered with two more second period goals as
Davis Van Gemerden answered 34 seconds later while Garvie completed his hat trick with 27 seconds to go in a 10-1 ETBU lead after two periods.
In the third period,
Alex Domas made a key stop on a penalty shot by Chase Deacon. But Deacon would get a measure of revenge as he would trickle one past Domas for a 10-2 score. Domas would get the final say as he would hold Deacon and the Eagles scoreless for the rest of the period. Meanwhile, Baird would score two more goals at 10:51 and 13:27 to make it 12-2 while Garvie collected his fourth goal of the game on a power play at exactly 17:00.
