JACKSON, Miss. – Entering the second game of a two-game road trip, the East Texas Baptist University men's basketball team was unable to overcome cold shooting in the first half leading to an, 82-73, loss to Millsaps College. ETBU drops to 1-1 on the year.
Landin Brown led all scorers in the contest with 16 points and five rebounds. Chris Haynes added 11 points and five boards of his own, while
Jayden Williams rounded out the effort with 10 points. As a team, ETBU shot just 39 percent from the floor (25-of-64) and connected on just 4-of-16 (25%) three pointers in the loss. Kaleb Jenkins led the Majors with 15 points.
Jenkins scored the opening bucket of the game, connecting on a shot from beyond the arc to put MC on top 3-0 nine seconds into the contest. Brown responded by hitting a floater in the paint 20 seconds later to bring the score to 3-2. The Majors capped off an early 8-2 spurt with a layup by Kalvin Spikes at the 17:30 mark of the half. The run was ended with a score by
Ahmad Caldwell, making it a four point deficit (8-4) on the next possession.
ETBU trailed by 10 (18-8) over the next five minutes of the half, until a three pointer by Williams trimmed the lead to seven, 18-11, at the 12:29 mark of the frame. Williams would ignite a Tiger fast break, after picking off a pass and finding
Nathan Fontenot for another three point basket to cut the lead to four (18-14) a minute later. ETBU headed into the locker room facing a nine point deficit (38-29) in spite of connecting on just 32 percent of their shots (11-of-34) in the first 20 minutes.
A layup by Spikes and a three point play by She'Chem Grant pushed the lead to 13 (42-29) in the opening minute of the second half. Grant responded with a three pointer over the next 30 seconds to give the Majors the 14 point lead, 45-31. The Tigers trailed by as many as 25 (68-43) before they would go on to outscore MC, 30-14, down the stretch. In spite of the comeback effort, ETBU came up short to the Majors, 82-73.
ETBU will continue the road portion of their schedule with a matchup against LaGrange University on Friday, Nov. 22
nd in Georgia. Tip-off for the matchup is set for 5:00 p.m.
