DALLAS, Texas – In their first ever playoff game in program history, the East Texas Baptist University hockey breezed by the Texas Christian Horned Frogs, 9-2, to advance to the second round. ETBU will now face top seed University of Texas El Paso at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
ETBU was led by
Skyler Spiller, who had two goals and three assists, while
Devon Baird and Davis VanGemerden picked up hat tricks on the night.
Tyler Fitzgerald was in net for all sixty minutes allowing two goals on 23 shots while making 21 saves. TCU picked up a goal from Bryan Constable and Evan Jones while Owen Roche gave up nine goals while making 53 saves.
Seventy-three seconds into the contest, Spiller got ETBU on the board with an early 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, VanGemerden (15:34) tallied his first goal of the night while Baird (13:40) followed with ETBU's third goal of the period. The rest of the first period remained scoreless with ETBU taking a 3-0 lead after the first period. The second period continued the momentum to ETBU's advantage as VanGemerden (18:24) and Spiller (12:07) picked up their second goals to bring ETBU up 5-0. TCU would finally get on the board with a goal at 7:06 to play in the period.
The Tigers would put the game out of reach with four unanswered goals to begin the third period as
Filip Soderstrom (18:38) made it 6-1 while Baird (12:17, 7:23) scored the next two goals to complete his hat trick. Van Gemerden (2:51) netted his third goal of the game, which made the score 9-1. It was only with eighteen seconds left that the Horned Frogs tallied goal number two, which brought the final tally to 9-2.
ETBU's game with UTEP begins at 7:00 PM on Friday night.
