Hockey (ACHA D2)

#TIGERSWIN | @ETBU_Hockey Sweeps Rival DBU Continuing Historic Start

SHREVEPORT, La. – Taking advantage of their second period scoring spree, the East Texas Baptist University hockey team ran their record to 6-0 as they dominated Dallas Baptist University in two games. These two wins put ETBU ahead of DBU 6-4 in the all-time series of games played against each other.

Friday night would see ETBU carry their momentum to win their fifth straight game with a 7-1 thumping. Ryan Gruszka led the way with two goals plus an assist for a team-high three points on the night. Brendan Laing would add a goal and an assist to finish with two points while Tyler Fitzgerald was brilliant in net allowing one goal and preserving 22 saves. In all, ETBU fired 51 shots on net.

Then on Saturday, ETBU would score seven straight goals after a 2-2 tie while cruising to an 11-3 victory. Davis Van Gemerden led the way with a hat trick performance while both Skyler Spiller and Timothy Zittel tallied two goals in the win. Fitzgerald would make 23 saves while backup goaltender Alex Domas came in to make 29 saves on 30 shots.

Game 1: ETBU 7, DBU 1
The first fifteen minutes were played with both teams putting up good chances only to have the goalies prevent any goals. But in a span of fifty-four seconds, the Tigers found the net as both Laing (16:20) and Gruszka (17:16) capitalized on the openings to go ahead 2-0 after the first period.

The Tigers then upped their lead to six goals as Riley Knott tallied his goal first forty-three seconds into the second period. Van Gemerden (5:19) and Albert Wiggins (16:57) would tally their first goals of the game while Gruskza (18:50) notched his second of the game to end the period. Each team would score once in the first two minutes of the third period as Matt Duncan (1:03) would answer DBU's first goal of the game. The Tigers would then kill off a few penalties to preserve the 7-1 win.

Game 2: ETBU 11, DBU 3
The Tigers would bring out the slap shot from Skyler Spiller (3:07), who connected three minutes into the game for a 1-0 lead. Then, Zittel (10:57) would pick up his first goal of the season near the halfway point of the first. But a penalty to the Tigers would mean DBU would respond with a power play goal to cut the lead to 2-1 entering the first intermission.  The Patriots begun the second period with a second power play goal early to tie the game at two apiece.

But then, the Tigers would counter with six straight goals to lead 8-2 after two periods. This included three from Van Gemerden who netted a regular (3:54), power play (5:58), and a short-handed (12:59) goal in the period. Knott would also collect a short-handed goal while Gruska (8:16) and Devon Baird would contribute with goals of their own. Spiller would add his second to begin the third period scoring (8:57) and while the Patriots would stop ETBU's seven unanswered goals with their third of the game, the Tigers would use insurance goals from Zittel (10:54) and Tyler Wathen (19:55) to close out the 11-3 victory.
