PREVIEW | @ETBU_Baseball Welcomes #1 Chapman to Woods Field

MARSHALL, Texas – Ready for an early test on the season, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team welcomes the defending national champion #1 Chapman University to Woods Field this weekend. The two teams met last year in a tight series in California with Chapman winning two games. ETBU won the first game last year, 3-0, and then fell in 11 innings, 7-6, before dropping the third game, 5-3. ETBU is 0-3 on the year.

  • Will Kelley hit his first career home run (a two-run shot) against CC in Game 1 in the 5-3 loss.
  • Ford Spigener batted .364 throughout the series with four hits in 11 at-bats while driving in one RBI and one double.
  • Jake Miller batted .300 during the series with three hits in 10 at-bats while driving in two RBI and one double.
  • Derrick Findley took the loss in game one allowing three runs on six hits in three innings while Peyton Miller (4.0 IP, one run), Erik Gipson (1.0 IP, one run), and Daniel Rubio (1.0 IP) had appearances in the game.
  • Alan Underwood (4.1 IP, seven hits, four runs) took a loss in Game 2 (7-0). ETBU held to two hits offensively with Connor Martin and Spigener recording one each.

  • Batted .361 as a team with an on base percentage of .449 and a slugging percentage of .548 through their first four games.
  • Mack Cheli finished with eight hits in 13 at-bats (.615 BA) while scoring seven runs and driving in eight RBI during the four games in the Cactus Classic.
  • Kevin Gregersen (.467 BA) and Brad Shimabuku (.389 BA, six RBI) both had seven hits in the four games.
  • Riley Glenn earned a win as a starter against LC with 6.0 IP of two-run, five-hit ball while striking out nine batters.
  • Nick Garcia earned a victory as a starter against UTD with 5.0 IP of two-run, two-hit ball while striking out five batters
  • Took the series from ETBU in 2019 with wins of 7-6 (11 inn.) and 5-3 after losing the first game, 3-0.
