PREVIEW | @ETBU_Baseball Opening ASC Play Hosting HPU

MARSHALL, Texas – Continuing a home stand that started last weekend, the East Texas Baptist University baseball team will host their first American Southwest Conference series of the season against Howard Payne University. This marks the first time in two seasons ETBU has met with HPU.

ETBU
  • 0-6 after dropping three contests to #1 Chapman University last weekend.
  • Lost 8-3 in Game 1 to CU. Samuel Rowland and Nick Deatherage had two hits while Will Kelley drove in the only RBI for ETBU. Peyton Miller (4.0 IP, four runs, four hits) took the loss
  • Lost 11-1 in Game 2. Ford Spigener recorded two hits while Cameron Neel had the lone RBI. Derrick Findley (4.1 innings, six runs, six hits) took the loss.
  • Lost 15-13 in Game 3. Deatherage (three RBI, three hits), Rowland (RBI, three hits), and Spigener (two hits, three RBI) would each homer for the Tigers. Alan Underwood started (3.1 IP, five runs, five hits) while Erik Gipson took the loss allowing three ninth inning runs on three hits.
  • Last took two-of-three from the Yellow Jackets back on Mar.23-24th, 2018. Findley would earn a win in ETBU's 10-2 victory with five innings allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Zackery Pierce would pitch a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and two walks.
  • Deatherage leads ETBU with a .500 batting average (seven-of-14) including a home run and four RBI.
  • Spigener is ETBU's hit leader with eight on the season.
  • Kelley is ETBU's RBI leader with five of the season.
  • Daniel Rubio, Austin Schaper, Creed Spenrath, and Julian Pokorny all have a 0.00 ERA.
  • Miller leads ETBU's pitching staff with six strikeouts.

HPU
  • 3-5 overall after a 17-2 loss to Schreiner University.
  • Finished with the best overall record in the ASC last season at 26-16 overall and 17-4 in conference play.
  • Currently on a four-game losing streak.
  • Jonathan McKay leads HPU with a .417 batting average (10-of-24) with a team high four doubles and one triple.
  • Nolyn Box has a team-high 11 hits in 29 at-bats for a .379 batting average while sharing the RBI lead of six with David Paleo.
  • Kyle Purdes is 1-1 for the season on the mound with the win coming against St. Thomas (TX) in which he allowed one run on seven hits in 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
  • Xavier Haines (1-0) has a team-low 4.35 ERA amongst the starters allowing six runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts.
  • Jeramy Dodson leads all HPU pitchers with eight strikeouts.
