MANSFIELD, Texas - Rallying back from two goals down, the East Texas Baptist University hockey team took the Texas A&M University Aggies into overtime but fell, 3-2, in the Texas College Hockey Conference Championship Tournament. ETBU is now 21-4-1 and will see if they receive a bid to the regional tournament.
ETBU's goals came from
Riley Knott and Davis VanGemerden in regulation while
Tyler Fitzgerald made 35 saves in 38 shots on net. For TAMU, Gary Russell, Huston Svondrk, and Connor Simpson, tallied a goal each with Simpson getting the winner.
The first period saw each team struggle for control with TAMU get more shot opportunities. In a span of three minutes, the Aggies would breakthrough with a pair of goals (8:25, 5:13) to go up 2-0 by the end of the first period. In the second period, ETBU showed more aggression, which culminated with a power play goal from Knott (6:23) cutting the lead to one, 2-1, at the end of period two.
Struggling to find the equalizing goal, the Tigers would manage to breakthrough and tie it up thanks to VanGemerden with 6:45 left to go in the game. Fitzgerald would keep the Aggies off the scoreboard for the rest of the period and the contest went into overtime.
Early in overtime, the Tigers had chances to win but in the end, the Aggies found the net with 15:05 left.
