BOULDER, Colo. – Playing their second hockey game in the 2022 Big Mountain Classic, East Texas Baptist University won their 20
th game of the year in a 6-4 win over Northern Arizona University. It is the second time in three years that ETBU has won 20+ games in a season and is now 20-2 overall.
ETBU traveled to the University of Colorado-Boulder's for the game as
Caleb Goudreau scored three out of the six goals earning him a hat trick. Of the remaining three goals,
Carson Loos scored two goals and
Timothy Zittel added one.
Tyler Fitzgerald started out in net and
Angus Laing received the nod and to finish out the game.
Unlike the previous night's match up, ETBU didn't waste any time getting on the board. Just 3:04 into the game
Noah Gaudette shot a cross-ice pass to Goudreau. Goudreau buried the puck in the back of the net to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead to start out the game. Roughly two minutes later Loos knocked one in for the Tigers, assisted by
Dominic Desjardins and
Mitchell Dolese. Goudreau then had his second goal of the period with 11:13 remaining with help from Filip Soderström. Continuing their relentless pressure while on the power play, Zittel scored a one-timer off a pass from Soderström. NAU managed to slow down the Tigers momentum, netting two goals with under 7 minutes left in the period, one being on a power play opportunity wrapping up the end of the first period, 4-2.
The 2
nd period started off with NAU scoring a short-handed goal just 1:51 back into play cutting the lead to one, 4-3. The Tigers were unable to find the back of the net leaving it at that score entering the third period.
The beginning of the third period left the ETBU bench feeling uneasy. Just 6:10 in, NAU able to tie the game at four with a power play goal. It wouldn't be until there was 6:22 left in regulation before the Tigers took back the lead. The puck deflected off the Icejacks goaltender's blocker pad and landed perfectly for Loos to claim his second goal of the contest. With less than a minute left in regulation, Goudreau tallied his third goal with an empty net finishing off NAU, 6-4, moving the Tigers to 2-0 in the Classic.
ETBU will face Weber State on Sunday in Greely, Colo.
