LEXINGTON, Ky. – A second half run by Baldwin-Wallace University ended East Texas Baptist University's chance of a victory as the Yellow Jackets had a 15-6 run to take the lead en route to the 85-77 win in the Don Lane Classic at Transylvania University. ETBU was up 56-51 with eight minutes to go when BWU went on a 15-6 run to take the lead, 66-62, not allowing the Tigers to take the lead again. ETBU is now 3-7 and will face DePauw University on Friday.
Jayden Williams led the team with 22 points going 7-of-7 from the line and making three three-pointers.
Ryan Elzy finished with 18 points going 8-of-13 from the floor as
Darry Moore recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Kurt Labeaud added 11 points and led the team with five assists.
ETBU shot 44 percent making just 26 percent from the arc but went 13-of-14 from the line (92 percent). BWU made 60 percent of their shots going 7-of-15 from the three-point line but made just eight free throws (53 percent). The Jackets had more points from the paint, 54 to 44, but ETBU out rebounded BWU, 35-28.
Just 1:30 into the game the teams were tied at four as the Jackets went on a run 6-0 for a six-point lead as all points were scored from inside the paint, 10-4. A jumper from Moore at 15:10 shrunk the lead to four, but it was brought back to six by the Jackets at 14:46, 12-6.
Christian Dews brought it back to four at 14:28, 12-8, and a jumper from Elzy at 5:55 tied the score at 21. ETBU took the lead with a layup from
Jaden Conner at 5:04, 23-21. The Jackets manage to tie it up at 3:58 at 23 and went on a 8-5 run for a three-point lead at the end of the first half, 31-28.
Joshua R. Davis tied the game to start the second half just 18 seconds in at 31. ETBU followed with a 9-5 run with points from Elzy, Moore, and Williams for a four-point lead, 40-36. A good jumper from Labeaud at 10:35 kept ETBU's lead at three, 51-48. With 12:32 left in the game, ETBU had a seven-point lead, 48-41, on a Labeaud jumper. Labeaud then hit a free throw with 10:35 left for a four-point lead, 52-48. At the 8:42 mark, Elzy made a layup for a five-point lead, 56-51. Over the next four minutes, BWU put together their 15-6 run to take the lead, 66-62, and made it a seven-point lead, 71-64, with 3:54 to go. ETBU cut the lead to two, once, but BWU was 5-of-6 from the line in the last 1:11 for the win, 85-77.
ETBU will play in the consolation game of the Don Lane Classic facing DePauw University on Friday at 1:00 p.m. central time in Lexington, Ky.
