LEXINGTON, Ky. – Holding off DePauw University in the final minutes for a 75-72 victory, East Texas Baptist University went 1-1 in Kentucky at the Don Lane Classic. ETBU is now 4-7 on the year and is off until Dec. 31.
Darry Moore recorded 24 points with five rebounds to lead the team.
Kurt Labeaud added 15 points and eight assists hitting 60 percent of his shots and
Jayden Williams finished with 10 points. DePauw's Rephy Stevenson had 22 points.
Both teams shot evenly in the game as ETBU made 46 percent of their shots and DePauw canned 48 percent. ETBU hit 41 percent (7-of-17) from the arc as DePauw hit only three three-pointers. At the line, ETBU went 9-of-13 (69 percent) and DePauw was 21-of-28 (75 percent). DePauw out rebounded ETBU, 35-30, but ETBU forced 12 turnovers for 13 points.
ETBU opened the first five minutes of the game with an eight-point lead, 16-8, on a Labeaud layup. DePauw cut the lead to two, 21-19, at the 8:20 mark, but two minutes later the lead was back to eight, 29-21, on a Williams three-pointer. DePauw fought back to bring the lead to two, 29-27, at 4:14, and took the lead, 33-31, with 2:01 left in the half.
Jaden Conner tied the game at 34 with 1:02 left and
Joshua R Davis gave ETBU the halftime lead, 37-36, on a three-pointer with 20 seconds left.
Building the lead back up to seven points, 52-45, on a
Ryan Elzy layup with 14:33 left in the game, ETBU still had a seven-point lead, 59-52, with 10:28 on a Moore layup. Moore gave ETBU a nine-point lead, 63-54, on a jumper at 8:44 and Williams made it a 10-point lead, 68-58, with 5:22 to go on a three-pointer. DePauw trimmed the lead to three, 72-69, with 38 seconds to go, but ETBU went 4-of-6 in the final 30 seconds from the line for the win.
ETBU will next play on December 31 at Hendrix College in Arkansas.
