WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Having a three-point lead with just over eight minutes to go in the game, East Texas Baptist University's offense went cold as Whitman College finished the game with a 16-7 run, taking the game away from the Tigers, 66-60. ETBU is now 0-3 on the year.
Jason Justice led ETBU for the second game in a row with 17 points, shooting .500 from the floor.
Joshua R Davis added 15 points and five rebounds, and Coin Roberts led the team with six rebounds, giving 13 points.
Nikolas Morin had five assists and five rebounds, and
Nathan Fleming recorded two blocks.
ETBU shot 44 percent making 38 percent of their three-pointers and only 56 percent of their free throws (9-of-16). Whitman made 41 percent from the floor, 17 percent from the arc, and 87 percent (20-of-23) from the stripe. Whitman outrebounded ETBU, 28-22, and forced 17 turnovers. ETBU had eight steals.
Whitman jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first seven minute of the game and never looked back in the first half. At the 9:07 mark, Whitman kept their 12-point lead, 24-12, but in five minutes, ETBU cut the lead to one, 27-26, on a 14-3 run (4:09). Joshua Joe and Joshua Davies each had five points in the run. In three minutes, Whitman responded with a 7-0 run, making their lead eight, 34-26. Morin cut the lead to five, 34-29, with 37 seconds left, but Whitman hit one of two free throws with 22 seconds left for a 35-29 lead at the half.
The first two minutes of the second half brought an eight-point lead, 39-31, for Whitman. ETBU responded on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take their first lead of the game, 42-41. Justice hit a three-pointer for the lead. ETBU hit three three-pointers in the run as Davis canned two of them. By the 10:50 mark, ETBU had a three-point lead, 48-43, and with 8:32 left, still held that same lead, 53-50, on a Justice layup. That was the last bucket made for six minutes, and Whitman went on a 10-0 run for a seven-point lead, 60-53. ETBU didn't hit a shot from the floor over six minutes. With under a minute to go, ETBU did have the lead down to two twice but couldn't move ahead of Whitman as they fell by six, 66-60.
ETBU will travel to Dallas on Saturday to face the University of Dallas at 4:00 p.m.
