AUSTIN, Texas – In a rare American Southwest Conference double header on Friday, #8 East Texas Baptist University swept Concordia University Texas in their first two conference games of the year. ETBU is now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the ASC.
ETBU won game one, 6-0, as
Sayers Collins pitched a two-hit shutout and then won the hitting game, 9-5, in game two. Overall, ETBU had 22 hits (7 doubles) and 17 runs and the pitching staff had 20 strikeouts.
Collins earned the win in game one moving to 3-0 on the year with seven strikeouts. In game two,
Preston Crow came in relief for the win.
Jagger Neely started for the no decision but had six strikeouts.
Connor Massimini,
Austin Barry, and
Jacob Evangelista had four hits while
Carson Wilson added three hits. Evangelista recorded three RBI while Massimini and Wilson added two RBI. Barry,
Justin Blancaflor, and
Brett Wagner added one RBI.
ETBU 6, CTX 0
After three scoreless innings, ETBU scored six runs in three innings for the win. Collins had a no-hitter through six innings before giving up two hits in the seventh. He retired the first nine batters and then in the fifth and sixth inning.
Evangelista and Massimini had two hits in the game as
Dylan Burnaman had two RBI. Evangelista, Wilson, Massimini, and Blancaflor had one RBI.
Massimini singled in the first run in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. Burnaman then had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning for a 2-0 lead. Wilson made it 3-0 in the fifth on a RBI single to left field scoring Blancaflor. In the sixth inning, Blancoflor had a sac bunt as Massimini was the fourth run to come in.
Hunter Rumachik was the fifth run of the game on a fielder's choice on Burnaman's at-bat and then Evangelista doubled in Burnaman for the 6-0 final.
ETBU 9, CTX 5
Both teams combined for 27 hits in the game but CTX recorded four errors as ETBU scored eight runs over the third through fifth innings. Neely started going 3.1 innings but gave up four earned runs with six strikeouts. Crow followed with 1.1 innings and three strikeouts with no runs on one hit.
Ben Burroughs then went 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and one hit and no runs.
Robert Croft finished the final two innings with two strikeouts with three hits.
Evangelista, Wilson, Wagner, and Massimini all had two hits while Barry went 3-of-5. Evangelista led the team with two RBI as Wilson, Wagner, Massimini, and Barry had one RBI.
ETBU took a 1-0 lead in the third but CTX followed with three runs in the bottom of the inning for the 3-1 lead. ETBU followed with three runs in the top of fourth as Wagner had a double for a RBI and Massimini recorded a RBI on a single. On that same play, Wagner came in on an error for the 4-3 lead. CTX tied the game in the bottom of the inning at four on a double.
Barry recorded a RBI single in the fifth as Evangelista added at two RBI single for the 7-4 lead. Wilson then singled in Evangelist to make it 8-4. In the eighth inning, a run came in on an error for a 9-4 lead. CTX added one in the ninth to make it 9-5.
ETBU will play in the final game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
