MARSHALL, Texas – Trying to beat the weather with an early morning start, #5 East Texas Baptist University finished off Howard Payne University taking the double header, 5-3, and 8-0. The second game was called in the top of the sixth inning due to weather. ETBU is now 15-4 and 6-0 in the ASC. It was also James Morgan Day as
Charles Gordon was honored for wearing the no.16 this year.
ETBU hit three home runs on the day coming with two from
Nicolas Chavez and the other from
Brett Wagner. Chavez, Wagner, and Landin Durdin led the team in hits each having two. Chavez then added four RBI as
Hunter Rumachik had three RBI, and Wagner two RBI.
Sayers Collins pitched six innings allowing two earned runs, four hits, with five strikeouts for his fifth win of the season. Will Croft pitched one inning for the save allowing one run, two hits, and striking out one batter for his fourth save of the year.
Jacob Sherman pitched all six innings that were played before the game was called as he allowed four hits and had five strikeouts for his first win of the year.
Game 1
ETBU 5, HPU 3
ETBU was down by one headed into the bottom of the first inning but Chavez had a two-run homer that put the Tigers on top, 2-1. After allowing one hit in the top of the third inning, Collins put away the Jackets with back-to-back strikeouts. A second two-run home run by Chavez in the bottom of the of the third inning moved the score to 4-1. Wagner stepped up to the plate and homered to right field to add a third run in the third inning making it, 5-1. The Jackets were able to close the gap off a groundout to shortstop in the top of the fifth inning, 5-2. HPU would score again in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to two, 5-3. Croft came in relief for Collins in the seventh inning to close out the game striking out two batters. Chavez led the team with four RBI on two home runs as Durdin also had two hits.
Game 2
ETBU 8, HPU 0
ETBU scored its first runs of the game come off an error in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. In the bottom of the third inning, Rumachik was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 3-0.
Austin Barry is then walked later in the inning with the bases loaded to earn a RBI as the scored moved to 4-0. In the same inning,
Jacob Newland singled in Wagner for a 5-0 lead.
Dylan Burnaman finished out the scoring in the inning on a sacrifice fly as Rumachik scored to make it, 6-0. In the fourth inning, both
Connor Massimini and Wagner had RBI singles to put ETBU up 8-0. Sherman recorded five strikeouts allowing just four hits overall and didn't allow a hit in the second, third, or fourth innings.
The game was then called in the sixth inning due to weather.
ETBU will travel to San Antonio, Texas to face the Trinity University on Wednesday, March 20
th at 6:00 PM.
