AUSTIN, Texas — An overtime thriller ended with a Tigers victory as No. 12/23 East Texas Baptist University edged Concordia University Texas, 59-57, in a clash at Concordia Fieldhouse. The Tigers secured the victory with a decisive six-point surge in the extra period after both teams ended regulation tied. ETBU capitalized on 24 turnovers by CTX, converting them into 16 points, and dominated the paint with 28 points. ETBU is now 8-1 on the year.
Macey Jones led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds, adding two blocks to her performance.
Tiffany Bickford also scored 16 points while making two 3-pointers and securing three steals.
Marley Keith contributed by recording five assists and collecting six rebounds.
Hannah Ayala added 10 rebounds and eight points.
ETBU shot 31 percent from the floor, 22 percent from the arc, and 62 percent from the line. CTX finished shooting 31 percent, 32 percent in three-pointers, and 40 percent from the free throws. ETBU out rebounded CTX, 51-50.
The first quarter began as ETBU managed to tie the game early with a jumper by Jones at 8:39, but struggled with shooting, converting only two out of 16 field goal attempts. Despite generating second chances with six offensive rebounds, CTX took advantage of turnovers, scoring seven fast-break points and extending its lead. The quarter ended with the Tigers trailing 13–6.
ETBU started the second quarter with a strong offensive display, highlighted by a three-pointer from
Tristan Smith at 9:03, narrowing the deficit to five, 16-11. Keith hit another three-pointer at 8:16, to pull within two, 16-14. The Tigers maintained their aggressive approach, with Bickford scoring a crucial layup at 1:20, extending their lead to six, 29-23. The visitors capitalized on Concordia's turnovers, building a decisive advantage by the end of the quarter outscoring the Tornados, 23–10 for a 29-23 lead at the half.
The Tigers seized momentum early in the third quarter with a series of successful inside plays. Jones sparked the run with consecutive jumpers, including a blocked shot and rebound, contributing to their 10 points in the paint. Ayala also played a crucial role by sinking two free throws at 5:26, extending their lead to 39–29. Despite the Tornados' late, ETBU maintained control. The quarter concluded with the Tigers leading 46–43, heading into the final quarter.
Sara Cowan's three-pointer, assisted by Ayala, at 9:47, pushed their lead to 49-43 early in the fourth quarter. A subsequent steal by Cowan at 9:21 highlighted their defensive efforts. Despite their efforts, the Tigers faced challenges as CTX gained ground. Bickford added another three-pointer at 2:37, assisted by Keith, momentarily extending the lead to 53-48. However, CTX responded with a strong finish, tying the game at 53 with a late tip-in at 0:30. ETBU failed on their last attempt to send the game to overtime.
ETBU triumphed late in the overtime period with a decisive sequence. At 0:58, Jones scored a crucial jumper in the paint, tying the game at 57 with an assist from Keith. As the clock wound down, Ayala secured an offensive rebound and made a critical tip-in with just three seconds left, giving the Tigers a 59–57 win.
ETBU improved to 8-1 on the season and will head home on Tuesday to face Centenary College at 5:00 p.m.
