MARSHALL, Texas – Giving six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, no. 21 East Texas Baptist University's comeback was nullified by no. 7 Trinity University, 12-10, in the NCAA Division III Marshall, Texas Regional Tournament. ETBU was tied with Trinity, 5-5, when they erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh inning for a five-run lead, 10-5. Trinity followed with six in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth to take the game, 12-10. ETBU is now 29-14 and facing Huntingdon College in the elimination game on Saturday night.
Carson Livesay recorded two hits, including a home run, and drove in 2 RBIs. Luke hit a home run, a double, and collected two RBI.
William Howard delivered with a home run and two RBI.
Ben Lea,
Nicolas Chavez, and
Dylan Burnaman each had two hits. Chavez added a home run along with Livesay, Bumpus, and Howard.
Hunter Rumachik, Lea, Chavez, and Burnaman each had an RBI.
Jagger Neely pitched six innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out five batters and issuing one walk.
Jackson Jones faced four batters without recording an out, giving up two hits, four earned runs, and two walks, including a home run.
Carson Speegle surrendered three hits, two earned runs in the 7th inning, with no outs.
Braden Karnes pitched two innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out two batters and giving up a home run.
Trinity took an early lead in the first inning with two solo home runs, leading 2-0 at the end of the frame. ETBU responded in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a series of hits. Lea started the inning with a single and eventually scored on Burnaman's RBI single. Livesay followed with a two-run homer, and later in the inning, Bumpus added another two-run homer, putting ETBU ahead 5-3 by the end of the fourth.
Trinity narrowed the gap in the fifth inning, scoring two runs through an RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly, bringing the score to 5-4. ETBU answered in the seventh, extending their lead with a five-run inning highlighted by a two-run homer from Howard and a solo shot from Chavez putting ETBU ahead 10-5.
The momentum shifted in the bottom of the seventh when Trinity scored six runs, including a grand slam helping them regain the lead, 11-10. Trinity added another run in the sealing the game with a final score of 12-10.
