CONWAY, Ark. — Outpacing Hendrix College in a Tuesday afternoon slugfest, East Tex. Baptist University (17-10) came away with a 17-13 victory over the Warriors at Warrior Field. ETBU amassed 18 hits, including two home runs, to outpace Hendrix's late nine-inning surge.
Connor Massimini drove in three runs and scored four times, including one home run and one double.
Joaquin Costa recorded three hits and contributed two RBIs while
Jobee Boone also had three hits with a RBI.
Kahne Nolen hit a home run, drove in two runs, and crossed the plate twice.
Carson Livesay added two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs with two RBIs.
Raef Wright gave two hits for two RBI and
Nathan Harmon added two hits for one RBI.
Juan Ortigoza earned three RBI with one hit.
Matthew Irwin started on the mound for ETBU, pitching three innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits, while striking out two and walking three.
Aiden Leonard followed with three innings of relief, surrendering an earned run on two hits and striking out two to earn the win.
Conner Smeltzer pitched two innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits.
Anthony Tellez struggled in his brief appearance, giving up six earned runs on three hits in just 1/3 inning.
Campbell Williams and
Jake Schumacher combined for the final outs, with Schumacher allowing two hits and striking out one in 2/3 inning.
In the first inning, Livesay singled and advanced to third on a throwing error. Massimini then homered down the left field line, bringing in two runs. Hendrix responded with a run, but ETBU held a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
In the third inning, Massimini was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a series of plays before Costa doubled, driving in two runs.
Nathan Harmon added to the tally with a sacrifice fly, scoring Costa to extend the lead to 6-2 at the end of the third.
More offensive came in the fifth inning for ETBU as four runs were scored. Costa singled and later scored, followed by Boone and Harmon reaching base to set up Ortigoza's two-RBI single. Livesay tripled, bringing in two more runs, making the score 10-3.
ETBU added another run in the sixth when
Carter Nannini doubled and scored on
Raef Wright's single, extending the lead to 11-3.
In the seventh, ETBU capitalized on hits and walks to score four more runs. Massimini's double brought in two runs, and Wright's groundout added another, pushing the lead to 15-6. Nolen had a two-run home run in the ninth to push the lead to 11, 17-6, but Hendrix mounted a late scoring seven runs in the inning, but ETBU held onto the win, 17-13.
ETBU travels to Sherman, Texas, for a Wednesday game at 6:00 p.m. against Austin College.
