MARSHALL, Texas — On a sweltering Senior Day afternoon at Cornish Field, East Texas Baptist University lost a hard-fought match to the University of St. Thomas Houston, 3-1. ETBU put five of its 10 shots on goal, matching St. Thomas (TX)'s shots-on-goal total but was outscored 2-1 in the second half as the Celts pulled away late. Before the game, ETBU recognized three seniors,
Giselle Laredo,
Kelsey Flanakin, and
Paige Barclay.
Overall, for ETBU,
Grace Shurley scored a goal and finished with two shots, putting one on a frame.
Madeline Rumachik recorded an assist.
Paige Barclay matched Shurley with two shots and placed one on goal.
St. Thomas (TX) broke through at 41:09 on a successful goal, and ETBU went to halftime down 1-0.
Taylor Lauster made a save during a scoreless stretch that included several St. Thomas (TX) attacks earlier in the first half, while the Tigers put shots on frame from
Caroline Smith,
Sofia Licardie and Flanakin that St. Thomas saved.
ETBU answered in the 72nd minute, when Shurley scored off Rumachik's assist to cut St. Thomas (TX)'s lead to one, 2-1. The Tigers later had a penalty kick saved at 79:54 and a Barclay shot stopped at 84:32, but St. Thomas (TX) added an 86th-minute goal to seal the half and match at 3-1.
ETBU travels to Kerrville, Texas, to face Schreiner on Thursday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Mountaineer Field as the Tigers begin conference play.
HALF BREAKDOWN
First Half
- Lauster saved a St. Thomas shot at 8:04, and ETBU kept the Celts off the board through a stretch that included three corner kicks from 17:08 to 18:24.
- The Tigers answered with a 19:43 corner and shots on goal from Licardie and Flanakin, but St. Thomas saved both attempts.
- St. Thomas (TX) generated another shot and corner in the 38th minute, then the Celta scored at 41:09 to make it 1-0. Lenah Montes put ETBU's final shot of the half wide at 42:12.

- St. Thomas (TX) added to its lead at 55:11, scoring to make it 2-0 during a stretch that included four ETBU fouls between 49:15 and 57:08.
- The Tigers generated chances after that, with Barclay and Shurley each taking shots before St. Thomas (TX) followed with a corner kick and two shots, including one stopped by a team save at 67:37.
- After St. Thomas (TX) missed a penalty kick at 71:01, ETBU pulled within 2-1 at 71:53 when Shurley scored off an assist from Rumachik.
- The Tigers later missed a penalty kick at 79:54 and had a Barclay shot saved at 84:32 before St. Thomas (TX) scored again at 86:00 to set the 3-1 final.
