MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Falling behind early in the first half to Sewanee, East Texas Baptist University dropped their second game of the season, 5-1, in Tennessee. ETBU was outshot 27-12 and faced 15 shots on goal while totaling 10 saves.
Brenden Davidson scored ETBU's goal on his only shot late in the first half as
James Mastrangelo recorded an assist.
Ryan Lord made six saves in 45 minutes.
Joshua Weston added four saves over the final 45 minutes.
ETBU's response came at 41:57, when Davidson scored off Mastrangelo's assist after Sewanee had built a 4-0 lead. Earlier,
Jacob Whittington put a shot on frame during the Tigers' early chances, and Lord made six saves as Sewanee continued to create looks. The first half ended with ETBU trailing 4-1.
The Tigers conceded the only goal of the second half at 50:49, to make it 5-1. Weston kept the score there and ETBU generated a late push with
Aiden Fortenberry's shot on goal, two corner kicks and attempts by
Joel Gonzalez and
Graylen Bowman in the final 11 minutes. The match ended with Sewanee taking the match, 5-1.
ETBU's road trip continues as they travel to face Schreiner University on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. starting American Southwest Conference play in Kerrville, Texas.
HALF BREAKDOWN
First Half
- ETBU generated early looks from Whittington, including a shot on goal at 9:16, before Sewanee moved ahead 1-0 at 14:10.
- The Tigers earned corner kicks at 14:50 and 20:42 and got a shot from Jacob Wenzel, while Lord made multiple saves during a Sewanee attacking stretch that kept the score at 1-0.
- ETBU put shots on frame from Andrew Bradford and Abdulqader Majid in the 34th and 37th minutes, but Sewanee followed with three goals in just four minutes to push the lead to 4-0.
- Davidson answered for the Tigers at 41:57 off an assist from Mastrangelo, and ETBU went into halftime trailing 4-1.
Second Half
- Weston made saves on several Sewanee shots at 46:54 and 47:27 before eventually succeeding in their effort at 50:49 to make it 5-1.
- - The middle stretch turned physical with six fouls from 59:58 to 68:36, while Weston added another save at 63:34 and Sewanee put another shot high at 64:01.
- - ETBU pushed late with a Fortenberry shot saved at 79:15, two corner kicks in the 86th minute, and shots from Gonzalez and Bowman before Sewanee finished off the 5-1 result.
