BROWNWOOD, Texas — In a close, hard-fought match that went to the wire, East Texas Baptist University came up just short of victory vs. Howard Payne, 1-0. ETBU took four shots, including two on goal, while facing 16 shots and getting five saves. They are now 4-4-0 and 1-1-0 in the ASC.
Taylor Lauster recorded five saves over 90 minutes, making three stops in the first half and two in the second.
Rylie Graul put her lone shot on goal off the bench.
Grace Shurley also placed her only shot on the frame.
The Tigers fell behind 1-0 in the first half on a Howard Payne goal at 9:11. Lauster kept the deficit at one with three saves, including stops in the 28th, 37th, and 41st minutes. ETBU put shots on goal through Shurley and Graul, but Howard Payne carried the 1-0 lead into halftime.
ETBU kept Howard Payne scoreless in the second half, with Lauster making two saves as the home side generated late pressure.
Madeline Rumachik had the Tigers' lone recorded shot of the half in the 74th minute as Howard Payne held off the Tigers, 1-0
ETBU will host Centenary College (LA) on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Cornish Field in Marshall, Texas.
HALF BREAKDOWN
First Half
- ETBU generated a corner kick in the opening minute, and a Giselle Laredo shot at 2:27 before Howard Payne took a 1-0 lead at 9:11.
- Howard Payne kept pressure on through the middle of the half with two shots and two corner kicks between 16:46 and 24:41, and Lauster saved a Howard Payne attempt at 27:26.
- The final stretch included five fouls from 32:01 to 40:45, with Lauster adding saves at 36:30 and 40:08 before Graul had a shot saved at 42:35. Howard Payne led 1-0 at halftime.
Second Half
- Howard Payne was called offside twice before putting two shots off target in the 66th and 67th minutes.
- Lauster made a save at 72:20, and ETBU answered with Rumachik's shot at 73:43 before Howard Payne added a corner and another off-target attempt.
- Howard Payne kept pressure on late with four shots from 79:02 on, including another Lauster save, and two corners in the final two minutes, but the Tigers did not concede in the half as Howard Payne finished ahead 1-0.
