Box Score SHREVEPORT, La. - In a match that featured a lot of contact combining for 32 fouls, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team fell in its season opener by a 2-1 margin against host Centenary College (La.).
In what proved to be a constant battle of bodies and wills on Tuesday night at Mayo Field, ETBU (0-1) could not convert the equalizer in the final 10 seconds of regulation. Following a red card assessed against Centenary (1-0) in the 90th minute, ETBU's Justin Adams' free kick attempt drilled a Centenary defender, and shortly after another Adams' shot sailed well over the goal to seal the Centenary victory.
ETBU concluded the night with a 17-to-11 shot advantage, including a 10-to-5 edge in terms of shots on-goal. ETBU also held a 9-to-4 upper hand in corner kick attempts.
Following a scoreless first half, Centenary broke through on a well-placed free kick off the foot of Ivann Amaya. His shot eluded the reach of diving ETBU goalkeeper Juan Perales in the 56th minute to put Centenary in the lead, 1-0.
Just over 20 minutes later, Adams and Joel Botello teamed up for the match-tying goal. Botello beat Centenary goalkeeper Rylan Whan in 76th minute to knot up the action at 1-1.
Centenary's Michael Pullano, however, capitalized on a quick sequence of passes from teammates Amaya and Jeremy Klespis to notch the decisive goal less a minute later in the 77th minute.
In addition to his goal, Botello fired off four shots on the night, all of them on-target.
Perales played the entirety for ETBU, stopping three shots and allowing a pair of goals. Whan also played all 90 minutes for Centenary, making nine saves and surrendering a single goal.
ETBU continues a three-match road swing on Friday afternoon at Texas Lutheran with the opening kick set for 4 p.m. at Gustafson Field in Seguin, Texas.
