MARSHALL, Texas – Another historic moment marks the number two position on the East Texas Baptist University top 10 team list from 2015-16 as it goes to the football team. ETBU's 27-21 upset win over #8 Hardin-Simmons University gave them a share of the American Southwest Conference championship. The championship was only the second for program and the first since 2003. ETBU finished the year at 7-3 and 4-1 in the ASC.

Playing on a rain soaked, muddy field, ETBU held on for a 27-21 victory. Leading the way was senior running back Kendall Roberson who rushed 50 times for 193 yards and three touchdowns. On defense, C.J. Johnson finished with 12 tackles (8 solo), three sacks (-31 yards) and four tackles-for-loss (-33 yards) while Garrett Gibson and Sam Williams added 10 tackles each.

ETBU struck first with a Jourdan McNeil one yard rush to put ETBU up 7-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter. After holding HSU to three-and-out and a botched punt attempt, Roberson pushed 11 yards to give ETBU a 14-point advantage just two minutes after their last score. HSU would dominate the second quarter with 21 straight points to lead at halftime, 21-14.

ETBU's defense took over in the second half as they would hold HSU to five punts and forced two turnovers on downs. Roberson would add two touchdowns in the third quarter to give ETBU the lead they would never relinquish. He scored from two yards out at the 11:05 mark to tie the game at 21 and then with 1:47 left in the third he went in from three-yards out to take the lead for good, 27-21. HSU would never find the end zone in the fourth and ETBU ran onto the field celebrating a historic win.
