MARSHALL, Texas – After going 1-0-1 this past week, the East Texas Baptist University men's soccer team will continue its American Southwest Conference play with a matchup against Sul Ross State University on Thursday, Sept. 27 in Alpine, Texas. ETBU will conclude this week's slate of games with a non-conference match against Colorado College on Sunday, Sept. 30, at Cornish Field. Entering the week, ETBU is 3-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in ASC play.
Six different players are tied for the number one spot in goals made, each scoring a single goal on the season thus far.
Juan Cairo leads the way with shot attempts at 10 total and three coming right at the goal.
Daniel Rutter and
Travis Floyd each have nine shots total to take second place on the team.
Silas Sangano has a goal made and leads the team in shots on goal with five.
Bryant Botello mans the defensive effort, recording 32 saves and an overall record of 3-2-1 heading into this week. As a team, ETBU has six goals made on 9.1 attempts per match on a total of 64 shots. 22 of the team's shots have come right on goal for a percentage of .344 percent.
ETBU will make program history on Thursday afternoon when they take on SRSU in Alpine, Texas, as it will be the first meeting against the Lobos. In the program's first season, SRSU was able to pick up the program's first win with a 3-2 victory over Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, Sept. 15. Luis Gonzalez leads the Lobos with four goals and one assist for a total of nine points on the season. SRSU enters Thursday's contest with an overall record of 1-4 and an ASC record of 1-1.
The final match of the week will take place at Cornish Field where ETBU will face-off against Colorado College on Sunday, Sept. 30. CC comes into the match after a shutout over Schreiner University, 3-0, on Sunday, Sept. 23. Skyler Starkragsdale and Daniel Krueger each have three goals made for CC for a total of six points. Overall, the Tigers are 6-3 entering the weekend matchup.
After a pair of physical matches this past week, Head Coach
Chris Crawford talked about the mindset of the team heading into another set of challenging matches.
"It's going to be a lot different than anything we've ever done. This is the first time we're facing this program. We just have to make sure that the guys know that as soon as we hit the field it's time to go. The moment we get on the bus, the guys know that we have work to do," Crawford said.
ETBU will take on SRSU at 3:30 p.m. in Alpine, Texas, on Thursday, Sept. 27.
