MARSHALL, TX- It's been a fairly successful early conference run for the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team. The Tigers are currently 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in American Southwest Conference matchups. After holding their previous opponents the Mary-Hardin Baylor Crusaders scoreless in the eventual stalemate last weekend, ETBU will look to hone in on the defensive end in hopes to gain a sweep on the road trip to Abilene. The women's squad will first matchup with McMurry University on Thursday night. The team will end this week's round of ASC games with a visit to Hardin-Simmons University to face-off against the Cowgirls.
The Tigers come into Thursday's contest with the War Hawks looking to improve on their perfect record at 12-0 all-time. ETBU took the last meeting 1-0 on Cornish Field. McMurry is 2-4 overall and 0-1 in ASC games. The team's last match ended in a 6-0 loss to Sul Ross State on Saturday, Sept. 16.
ETBU will remain in Abilene, Texas, for a weekend matchup against Hardin-Simmons University on Saturday, Sept. 23. The team will seek out its first ever win against the Cowgirls this weekend as the team has gone 0-13 overall in the matchups. Hardin-Simmons is unbeaten so far this season. The team is 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Cowgirls have scored an impressive 16 goals in their last two games and have held their opponents scoreless.
Leading the way for the ETBU women's squad is senior
Heather Brady. Brady has recorded three goals this season along with dishing out one assist. Brady ranks second on the team in shot attempts at 19, including seven shots on goal. The senior forward has started in six games this season.
Freshman standout
Ashleigh Rondon has made her mark on the Tigers' squad this season. Rondon leads the team in shot attempts at 25 overall, with 12 of those shots coming on goal. Rondon ties Brady with three goals made this season.
Junior
Chase Swann continues her steady contribution, as she is tied for third place in shots made (2) and fourth in shot attempts (8). Swann comes into this week's contests with a .500 on goal shooting percentage.
Claire Montondon anchors the defensive effort for the Tigers. The freshman has played in six matches and started in two recording 10 saves and a .714 saving percentage on the year.
After a successful week for ETBU, head coach Erik Salberg talked about his team's effort across the field:
"We know that we're playing well. We haven't allowed more than a goal since we've played Schreiner. The girls have really stepped up and have had a 'refuse to lose' type attitude and I think that is going to carry us far."
