MARSHALL, Texas - Battle-tested, stingy and disciplined are just a few ways to describe the efforts of the East Texas Baptist University women's soccer team this season. Coming off of a two-game American Southwest Conference road trip to West Texas, ETBU finished 1-1 and are sitting at 5-3 overall and 2-1-1 in ASC play. The team will take a break from conference play on Tuesday as they will travel to Jackson, Miss., to battle Millsaps College at 5:00 p.m. ETBU will then return to Cornish Field for a show-down against conference opponent Sul Ross State on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 1:00 p.m.
The women's squad have matched up well against the Majors, winning the last three contests. ETBU is 5-4 overall in nine matches against Millsaps. The Majors are seeking their first victory of the season. The home team is 0-6-1 on the year and are 0-4 at home thus far with only one goal scored. ETBU has been very stingy on the defensive end, only allowing one goal in 207 straight minutes during one stretch this season.
When Sul Ross State last battled the Tigers, the game ended in a stalemate at 2-2 last season. The Lobos come into Saturday's match at 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference games. SRSU had 15 shots overall and 11 coming on goal in the last meeting. Conversely, ETBU managed 25 shots, with 17 on goal and nine saves last season.
Senior
Heather Brady continues to lead a balanced effort across the field for ETBU. Brady comes into this week's games with four goals made and 23 shots overall as 12 of those 23 shots have come on goal.
Ashleigh Rondon continues to show her dominance in her first season with ETBU. The freshman leads the team in shot attempts at 29 with a team leading 14 shots on goal. She also ties Brady with four goals on the year.
Freshman
Claire Montondon continues to stabilize the defense with a team leading 20 saves. Montondon has also picked up three wins as the Tiger's starting goal keeper.
Head coach
Erik Solberg is pleased with the overall effort of the team this season. He believes it will ultimately come down to the Tigers' execution on both sides of the ball.
"We know coming in that they're going to be hungry but we also expect, with our quality of players, we can get after them right away. It just comes down to us finishing our chances," Solberg said.
ETBU will look to get back on the winning track this week with two matches.
